They live 70 to 100 years, producing eggs for about 40 years, Owen says. Raising ostriches did take a little getting used to, though. Theyre strange animals, Shelton says.

You cant lead them, you cant herd them, and theyll eat anything. In fact, Owen says someone onqe inspected the stomach of a dead ostrich and found a 3-foot length of rope, a pencil, a comb, three gloves, a handkerchief, an alarm clock key, a bicycle valve and seven coins. ostriches Shelton in herefords, Owen in grain. Owen also has raised catfish and Christmas trees. The two were considering llamas before they set sight on their first ostrich.

Although the ostrich is accustomed to living on arid plains, it has adjusted well to Missouri weather and didnt even mind last winters snow. They stayed right out in it, Shelton says. They only came in (to the stable) one night the night it was 15 below. Owen and Shelton feed their birds a mixture of corn, trout chow and rabbit pellets, as well as scraps of fruits and vegetables. The birds also forage for grass, insects and small Mint nj, hj lL I jLS-et? Yb 3' ml 10 males and eight females.

Right now theyre selling the offspring to other ranchers and to gentleman farmers who like the exotic. But eventually they plan to raise ostrich chicks and process them for their hides and meat. The hide is the main byproduct, says Shelton, but right now, at $5,000 per chick, no ones butchering them. Owen says there are only 3,000 to 4,000 ostriches in the United States, and only 100 to 200 of those are adult breeding pairs. This all leads to a current shortage of quality breeding stock as well as a very, very excellent market for future production birds, he says.

Ostrich hide, which is used for boots, purses, belts and other accessories, can sell for $30 to $35 a square foot, Shelton says. South Africa the ostrichs native home is the worlds largest producer of ostrich hide, but federal trade sanctions have stemmed the supply. We were importing about 100,000 hides a year. But the boot manufacturers weve talked to could use twice as many, Shelton says. The meat, which Shelton says is as tender and tasty as filet mignon and lower in cholesterol than chicken, is beginning to show up in gourmet markets.

(AP) Mickey Owen and John Shelton are ranchers, all right, but dont look for cattle on their spread. Ostriches are their game. Their Loutre Valley Ostrich Ranch near this eastern Missouri town has prompted a few raised eyebrows and is known in the area as that big bird ranch. Shelton offered his hand to Caesar, a prize 9V2-foot, 450-pound ostrich. The stubbly-headed creature inspected his hand through his long, girlish lashes then reached out and nipped the palm.

Thats a friendly peck, Shelton says. But they can clamp down. They also have a powerful boot. They kick forward, Owen says, like a kick boxer. Owen and Shelton are fledglings at ostrich farming, still in their first year.

They grow on you, Owen says as the long-legged creatures crowd around him at the edge of their pen, weaving and bobbing and clacking their wide flat beaks. You think, Oh my God, what a gaudy-looking thing, but they grow on you. Its a ready-made industry, says Shelton, reeling off the prices that ostrich hide, meat, eggs and feathers command: Breeding pairs can sell for $50,000, chicks for about $5,000 a pair, and a female ostrich can lay about 40 eggs a year. Two generations later, Knopf published The Complete Lyrics of Lorenz Hart.

Alan Jay Lerner, whose lyrics include My Fair Lady, Camelot and Gigi, considers it pointless to try to judge which of the old masters was best. He called them all master craftsmen and added: I am exhilarated by the gaiety, style and surprising passion of Cole, overwhelmed by the wonderfully slangy sentimentality and ingenious versatility of Ira, touched by the disarming simplicity of Berlin and forever impressed by Oscar Ham-mersteins dramatic ability. Cole Porter, who wrote more than 800 songs, was lucky to live in an era that was, as John Updike pointed out, a heyday of light verse when newspapers and magazines published Don Marquis, Louis Untermeyer, Dorothy Parker, Ogden Nash, E.B. Most schools offer a pooled income fund, in which a number of individual donations are combined and invested cooperatively. Another possibility is a deferred payment gift annuity, which lets younger investors donate now and receive annual income payments after retirement. Charitable gift annuities like Elsie Welters are irrevocable; the university owns the principal while guaranteeing an income for life based on a fixed percentage rate. Others, like the revocable charitable remainder trust, lets donors control principal and add, withdraw or transfer funds at any time even opening a bank account in trust for the university. trtftrmuiitmmM Compare George Michaels I Want Your Sex with Cole Porters Youre the top! Govt. Approves Patent Claims for New Diet Pill BEVERLY HILLS, CA (Special)-An amazing new weight loss pill called fat-magnet" has recently been developed and perfected by two prominent doctors at a world famous hospital in Los Angeles that reportedly guarantees you steady fat loss and calorie reduction by simply taking their tested and proven new pill. The U.S. government has just approved the doctors claims for a hard-to-get patent that confirms there has never been anything like their fat-bonding pill process before. Then all the trapped fat and calories are naturally flushed right out of your body because they cannot be absorbed. Within 2 days you should notice a change in the color of your stool, caused by the fat particles being eliminated.

Automatically Lose Fat According toone of the inventors. Dr. William Shell, heart specialist and associate professor of medicine at UCLA medical school, the new fatbonding process is a lazy way to lose weight because the pills alone automatically" reduce calories by eliminating dietary fat. It is 100 safe and not a drug. The fat-magnet pills are already sweeping the country with glowing reports of weight loss from formerly overweight people in all walks of life who are now slimmer, trimmer and more attractive again.

YOU MAY BE ENTITLED TO REFUNDS IF YOU BOUGHT ANY OF THESE PRODUCTS BETWEEN MARCH 1, 1988 AND AUGUST 31, 1988: By The Associated Press You have property you want to continue living on, but you also want to settle the question of who you give it to when you die preferably maximizing its value and minimizing taxes. Or possibly you need greater current income and look to your assets as a source, but you find that the capital gains penalty will prevent their profitable sale. What to do? Charitable trusts and gift annuities made to institutions like schools are one legal way to have your cake and eat it, too. Alf and Betty Thompson still live on their lakefront property in Illinois, even though they have deeded it to Millikin University in Decatur.

We spent 25 years building up our land and didnt want to just let it go, says Alf Thompson. While we did get a gift tax deduction, the more important benefit for us was helping Millikin carry on our development here. The Thompsons have planted hundreds of trees, shrubs and flowers on the property, which has grown from 12.5 to nearly 20 acres since they deeded it to the school. With their blessing, Millikin already is using it for meetings, and the land will be turned into a retreat for the school when the Thompsons die or give up life tenancy. If Elsie Welter had sold her 25 acres of land and an apartment house in Minnesota worth $500,000, she would have failed to realize a profit because of the capital gains penalty.

So instead she established a charitable gift annuity by donating the property to her alma mater, Concordia College in Moorehead, Minn. That way, she supported one of her favorite causes, education, and at the same time got a large tax deduction and continues to receive guaranteed annuity checks from the school. If Elsie had sold her real estate outright, the capital gams tax would have been tremendous, says John Pierce, director of planned giving at Concordia It would have cut her earmng power incredibly. The annuity gives her the cash flow to continue living life the way she wants to People who want their assets to go to colleges can use charitable trusts and gift annuities to donate money, property, or appreciated securities while continuing to receive income from those assets during their lifetimes.
